Sustainable Tourism, Social and Institutional Innovation — the paradox of dark sky in astrotourism

← Resources Library  |  Case studies & destinations

Escario-Sierra and colleagues (Sustainability 2022, 14, 6419) describe the ‘paradox of the dark sky’: in communities where widespread access to artificial light was itself a social welfare gain, a new collective approach to controlling light and light pollution can be perceived as a step backwards, limiting both everyday comfort and high-impact emotional experiences under the sky. The study reconstructs the views and interactions of the main social actors in Aragon and shows how the paradox can be reconciled by framing astrotourism as an opportunity for endogenous and sustainable development of forgotten areas.
