Dark Sky Alqueva — the world’s first Starlight tourism destination

← Resources Library  |  Case studies & destinations

The flagship case study for CANSTAR’s own territories. Dark Sky® Alqueva, in Alentejo (Portugal) and extending into Extremadura (Spain), was the first site in the world to be certified as a Starlight Tourism Destination. Its official site shows what a mature astrotourism product actually looks like: guided stargazing sessions, solar observation of the photosphere and chromosphere, astrophotography, sunset experiences and a qualified network of accommodation providers, operators and restaurants. Created in 2007 and initially backed by six municipalities, the destination now covers eleven and is managed by the Dark Sky Association.
