How Alqueva obtained the first Starlight Tourism Destination certification in the world, awarded by the Starlight Foundation and institutionally supported by UNESCO, UN Tourism and the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias. The territory later became the world’s first transboundary Starlight destination, covering municipalities in both Portugal and Spain — a symbolically important precedent for a cross-border project such as CANSTAR, since it demonstrates that the night sky knows no administrative borders.
