Exploring community self-efficacy to light pollution mitigation in a tourism destination

← Resources Library  |  Light pollution & sustainability

A survey of 366 residents in a rural Portuguese tourism destination (Rodrigues & Loureiro, Tourism Planning & Development, 2024) with a counter-intuitive result: tourism is not by itself a sufficient incentive for people to take individual measures against light pollution (β = 0.075, p = 0.243). However, residents do believe that integrating tourism with light-pollution mitigation at community level would improve the visitor experience (β = 0.427, p = 0.000). The practical conclusion is that destinations must invest in environmental education, not just in marketing.
