How can astrotourism serve the Sustainable Development Goals? The Namibian example

← Resources Library  |  Case studies & destinations

Dalgleish, Mengistie, Backes, Cotter and Kasai (ASP Conference Series, Vol. 531) use Namibia to show how astrotourism can be linked explicitly to the Sustainable Development Goals — goals 4, 5, 8, 9, 10 and 11 in particular. Namibia is an ideal laboratory: very low population density, little light pollution, dry skies, the Hoba meteorite, the NamibRand reserve and the H.E.S.S. observatory, plus a network of communal conservancies covering around 20% of the country. The paper is also candid about the main hurdle: training tour guides in astronomy and stargazing, which is why the authors developed both a course and a ‘train the trainer’ approach.
