The Sky and Sustainable Tourism Development: a case study of a Dark Sky Reserve implementation in Alqueva

← Resources Library  |  Case studies & destinations

The academic account of how the Alqueva Dark Sky Reserve was built (Rodrigues, Rodrigues & Peroff, International Journal of Tourism Research, 17(3):292–302, 2015). It documents the partnership model that made it possible — tourism entities, municipalities, universities, non-profit associations of rural tourism entrepreneurs and regional development agencies — the two core objectives (a sustainable use of light strategy and maximising tourism opportunities) and, notably, an extremely low budget: around €39,000 since 2009, with most of the work carried out by volunteers and one key partner organisation, relying on media attention rather than paid promotion.
